The Lost Valley Handicapped Ski Program

The Beginning

During the late 1980s, serveral skiers were sitting around the base lodge at Lost Valley Ski Area talking about the day they had spent on the slopes and the sport they loved so well. This was nothing unusual, except in this case most of these individuals were also instructors at the popular ski area.

Out of this conversation was born the concept for what has become Central Maine Adaptive Sports. All of these individuals, in addition to being ski instructors, have been going "the extra mile" and have been volunteering their time and skills to teach persons with disabilities how to enjoy snow sports.

By the winter of 1991, these dedicated individuals, joined by others, had put together a plan, and on March 17 of that year the first set of by-laws were drawn up and signed by Kenneth Batty, Christine Chamberlain, Gretchen Larochelle, Sharon Neilsen, Amy Pact, Cynthia J. Paradis and Michael E. Rogers.

The Goal

Central Maine Adaptive Sports focuses on students abilities rather than their disabilities. The goal is to provide a safe and enjoyable skiing experience for both students and instructors. Also we strive to provide the most up-to date training for volunteer instructors, and support a technologically sound equipment inventory.

The main goal of the Central Maine Adaptive Sports program is to teach disabled persons with any disability to ski with a sponsor or family member. Since their meager start, hundreds of adaptive ski lessons have been given to people of all ages with physical, mental and developmental handicaps.

The Situation

Central Maine Adaptive Sports is a non-profit organization. The staff of CMAS is made up entirely of volunteers, and funded largely through donations.

In addition to voluteer ski instructors, other volunteers are needed to handle such tasks as equipment management and repair, selling of tickets, asisting in promotion and a variety of duties througout the winter.
